Ill-Gotten Gains
Events and announcements
News:
I am having a survey show of the last 15 years of my video work curated by Laurel Ptak, her first in the new role of Curator-At-Large for Lighthouse Works. The show is called Ill-Gotten Gains and is on Fishers Island, a complex place class-wise, and will run from Sept 20-Dec 20. To get there you take a ferry from New London, CT. If you drive your car onto the ferry prepare yourself for a bit of emotional abuse from the ferrymen. It’s only fair: most of the island is inhabited by the ultra-wealthy. I was told by the grocer that the minute the summering folks depart, the workers arrive to begin home improvements, infrastructure repair, and any maintenance work.
Videos will be installed on the cracker shelf of the grocery store, on a wall next to where the workers clock in and out in the cafe, within the loose screw section of the hardware store, in a doctor’s office waiting room, community center, huge unfinished industrial warehouse space with magnificent panoramic water views.... Spaces that are art-coded and those that are utilized every day for utilitarian purposes. We’ll even employ a crumbling cinema that was built to entertain the military back when the island was used as a base. Giant holes in the ceiling are reportedly from where the Temptations ripped out their huge stage lights.
Then on the 4th and 5th of October our video Acetone Reality will premiere at the New York Film Festival. They recently announced the schedule and I want to see everything! Michael Bell-Smith and I made this single channel edit from the 2 channel installation we did at Timeshare in January. Readers of this newsletter may remember the unfortunate timing of this show (wildfires + norovirus), so it feels joyfully recuperative to be able to celebrate this premiere in NYC with friends. We don’t normally collaborate, and may never do it again despite it being very fun this time. We like to leave a party while it’s still good.
When so much around me feels so precarious, I’m increasingly grateful for these opportunities to show my work. Many, many people to thank. Hope to see some of you there!
There will be another event on Fishers Island in mid-October.
Thanks for reading!
